What is the Colon?
The colon is the last part of our digestive system where all the undigested wastes are stored and expelled out of the body. It is approximately 60-inches in length and divided into four segments viz. ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid colon. It is followed by the rectum and anus, and all the three parts together form the large intestine.
Symptoms of Colon Cancer
Under normal condition, the cells of the colon divide and replace the old, worn out cells. In simple words, the cell division occurs only when the body needs new cells. Sometimes, the cells keep on dividing uncontrollably. As the result, an extra mass of tissue called tumor is formed. The tumor of the colon becomes malignant when its cells invade and damage other cells and organs of the body.
In the initial stages, colon cancer is literally symptomless. As the time passes by, the symptoms start coming to the fore.
Some common signs are as follows:
- Weight loss
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Changes in bowel habit
- Bloating
- Cramps
- Narrow or pencil stools
- Red, black or dark-colored blood stools
Some other signs of colon cancer are peptic ulcer disease, where small holes are formed in the lining of esophagus or stomach due to over-secretion of acidic digestive juices, Crohn’s disease, which is associated with chronic inflammation of the intestine, diverticulosis, in which a diverticulum or small bulging sac in the wall of the intestine gets ruptured and infected, and ulcerative colitis, which is also characterized by the severe inflammation of the intestine.
The symptoms of colon cancer vary according to the location of the tumor. For instance, if the tumor is present on the right side of the colon, then the primary symptom would be anemia because of slow blood loss. Anemia would lead to fatigue, shortness of breath and weakness. On the contrary, if the cancerous tumor occurs on the left side of the colon, then the symptoms would be abdominal pain, constipation, cramps, bloating and dark-colored blood stools.
