According to a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in the year 2005, 141,405 people were found to be suffering from colon cancer. If left undetected, this disease can adversely affect other vital organs and systems of the body, and under certain conditions, it can even lead to death.
Here are 7 warning signs of colon cancer that help in the early diagnosis of the disease:
Chronic abdominal pain - As the tumor grows in the large intestine, cramping abdominal pain is experienced. The pain in the abdomen is accompanied by several other conditions. Laboratory and other tests are performed to determine the actual cause of abdominal pain.
Nausea and vomiting - The growing tumor exerts pressure on the other organs of the digestive system, which leads to nausea and excessive vomiting. X-Ray, CT-Scan and other diagnostic tests are performed to determine the location and size of the tumor.
Severe diarrhea - One of the most important warning signs of colon cancer is severe and persistent diarrhea. Intestinal infection can also cause diarrhea, which is cured with proper medication. In the case of colon cancer, the diarrhea persists despite of taking medicines.
Bloating - Due to the growth of the tumor, the abdomen remains bloated and rigid.
However, bloating is also associated with stomach infection, indigestion and premenstrual syndrome. Hence, laboratory tests are essential to determine the actual cause of continual abdominal bloating.
Weight loss and fatigue - Due to the presence of growing tumor in the intestine, the patient doesn’t feel well and loses his appetite. The body, on the other hand, continues to use the usual amount of calories. When the food intake is less than normal and energy loss is more, then weight loss is bound to occur. Colon cancer also causes anemia, which leads to fatigue.
Presence of blood in the stool - This is one of the most prominent warning signs of colon cancer. The blood in the stool may be dark red or black in color. Due to the presence of blood, the stool bears a tarry appearance. Often, fecal occult blood test is performed to detect the presence of hidden blood in the stool.
Changes in bowel habits - As the result of colon cancer, changes in bowel habits also occur. This may involve frequent diarrhea or constipation. The number and regularity of bowel movements also change each day.
